Another Reason We’re Proud: AAV Staffer Coaches, Mentors At-Risk Youth

Here at Advanced AV, we pride ourselves on our commitment to supporting our people, and part of that support involves recognizing them for the amazing things they do outside of work. Recently, we profiled Jason Holbrook, an account executive who encourages healthy kids and healthy families by managing a youth running program. This month, we’ve got another coach and mentor to recognize: Gerald Savage, Service Coordinator, coaches at-risk high school students at Kensington Soccer Club, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization helping to serve one of the poorest and most underserved communities in America.

Kensington Soccer Club was founded in 2009. It was a product of the vision of Kensington High School teacher Jim Hardy, who wanted to give students safe, structured activities during the time school was out. The club’s core values then are their core values now: leadership, teamwork, and community.

“The club now uses soccer to help empower young children to be active in their communities, avoid the dangers of a life lived on the streets, and to live a full and healthy lifestyle,” Gerald said.

A coach since 2010 and board member since 2011, Gerald says he takes pride in not only his two tournament victories, two district championships, and the club’s first-ever trophy, but also the relationships he forms with his players.

“As a mentor, my greatest victory has been seeing each player I’ve coached graduate from high school in an area where less than 50 percent receive their high school diploma,” Gerald said. “To me, coaching these kids gives me an indescribable feeling. Even though these children are not my sons and daughters, I have a love for them like a father would. When they succeed, I succeed, and even if we fail, as long […]

Another Year, Another Opportunity to Volunteer

Often, we take for granted the most basic necessities—reliable shelter, refuge from a storm, or an education, for example. Volunteering can provide us with some perspective and help others along the way, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more familiar with this type of hands-on work than AAV Sales Engineer Darren Brown.

In March, we profiled Darren’s 2015 trip to poverty-stricken Belize. There, along with his group from Victory Church in Audubon, PA and in partnership with Oasis Ministries, he took part in building the foundation of a home for a local family and also worked on the construction of a preschool for the village children.

Fast-forward to today, and Darren has just recently returned from his second trip to Belize—this time, accompanied by his 13-year-old son, Elijah.

For the first three days of the journey, the group ran a vacation Bible school for almost 100 children from the surrounding villages (see photo 1). Some members of the team also worked on a building that will soon serve as an office for the ministry’s church, and others painted a house for a local family.

When they heard that rapidly approaching Tropical Storm Earl (see photo 2) could potentially turn into a hurricane sweeping through the country, though, plans changed—and they replaced painting with storm proofing some recently constructed school buildings.

Photo 2: Before the Storm

When Hurricane Earl hit around 4 am on Thursday morning, Darren’s compound lost power and water but otherwise suffered minimal damage. Others in the vicinity, though, were not as lucky. The team visited a few homes that had water damage, many because dirt floors had eroded into streams, ruining their food. Numerous roads were impassible because bridges were underwater. Also, some local banana […]

AAV Account Executive Makes Strides Outside the Office with Youth Running Program

Jason Holbrook is a dedicated, high-performing Account Executive here at Advanced AV, and we value him exponentially for that. We thought it was worth pointing out, though, that there’s another group of people who appreciate him for his dedication in a different way—the first through sixth graders he mentors and coaches in his role as Director of the Exeter Township Elite Track and Field youth program.

Giving the Gift of a Healthy Lifestyle, One Child at a Time

When Jason isn’t manning his station as the race director for the local Healthy Kids Running Series (a group of cross-country races for children ages 4-13), he’s managing the schedules and resources it takes to corral the 240 children and 43 volunteers (and counting!) who currently call the Exeter program home. Although the numbers have grown significantly from when he started the program two years ago, Jason says he enjoys providing educational and fun practices to the participants in a way that exposes them to track and field and also teaches them the importance of proper nutrition.

Of course, Jason, a CrossFit competitor, isn’t one to shy away from that challenge. In fact, he welcomes it as a cause worthy of his time.

“Living a healthy lifestyle is very important to me,” Jason said. “My father had a stroke very young due to his unhealthy lifestyle, and I was on the same path. It’s important to teach the children at a young age the importance of making healthy choices. I hope that I can have a positive impact on the community.

There’s no doubt Jason is doing just that, as his Exeter Track and Field participants not only gain skills in events such as distance running, sprinting, hurdles, shot put, long jump, and […]

Building Houses in Belize

At Advanced AV, we make a point to celebrate the exemplary work of our team members in the office, but we also pay attention to the extraordinary things they do outside of it. Serving the community—not just our local community but also our neighbors around the globe—is something Sales Engineer Darren Brown knows all about.

Last summer, Darren spent a week of his summer volunteering his time in the Cayo region of Belize, a place known for its tropical landscape, cultural diversity, ecological tourism, and Mayan temples. While on the mission trip with a group from the Audubon, PA-based Victory Church, though, Darren found much of the country to be “plagued by poverty and a lack of education.”

In the region, only 55 percent of children go to what’s known as upper school—the equivalent of high school in the states—and even fewer actually graduate. Often, girls get pregnant at a young age, and Darren reported a cultural norm that “views children as a burden,” leaving many abandoned or neglected. The goal of Darren’s mission trip with Victory Church was to partner with North Carolina-based Oasis Ministries to build safe, sturdy homes for local villagers while providing education and guidance.

Oasis Ministries was founded by Pastor Ron and Linda Braaten, who, on top of leading the Belize initiatives, have taken in orphans and worked to reunite them with their biological parents at the mission location.

“At any given time, there will be six to ten children and young adults living and working at the mission,” Darren said.  “Some of them have learned trades like cooking, construction, and carpentry through the mission to later find work or start their own business.”

While in Belize, Darren, and his team members built the foundation […]

Advanced AV Team Members Complete Dash 4 Diabetes

At Advanced AV, we know that healthy employees are happy employees. That’s why we encourage our team members to be their best selves both in and out of the office, and we celebrate with them when they reach their goals. (Just like we did with our GoRuck challenger Bryan Pass and Crossfit competitor Jason Holbrook).

Recently, a team of approximately 20 Advanced AV’ers took to the streets of downtown West Chester to complete the 22nd Annual Dash 4 Diabetes, a 5K run, 2.5K walk and fun run event benefitting the Diabetes Self-Management Program at Chester County Hospital. HR Coordinator Angela Johnson helped lead the charge, as she thought it would be a climactic ending to the company’s Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge—a 12 week program that rewards cash for team weight loss. (It’s worth noting that this year, our team members who participated lost a total of 175 pounds!)

“I got us involved in this as a way to end the company’s Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge, to keep propelling good health and to, of course, support diabetes research,” Johnson said. “It’s actually starting to take the form of a potentially bigger, broader community outreach program.”

These team-building events aren’t new to Advanced AV, as we’ve participated in community 5Ks for many years including the Color Run and the Lemon Run—the latter of which benefits childhood cancer research through Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

This year’s Dash 4 Diabetes happened on a relatively gloomy Saturday in early April, but the weather soon turned to match the positive spirits of our walkers and runners. The photo below shows a group shot of our athletes and participating family members (shout out to our furry friends as well!).

In fact, those […]

Advanced AV to Host Quarterly Local Art Showcase Benefitting Charity (Featured Artist: Jimm Scannell)

“Technology, like art, is a soaring exercise of the human imagination.” –Daniel Bell

Our region is both ripe with technical innovation and rich in culture. We know that here at Advanced AV, and we regularly look for ways to engage with and give back to our community of colleagues, customers and fellow citizens. Most recently, we’ve chosen to celebrate the robust local art scene by hosting a quarterly Artist Showcase. This initiative not only adds touches of beauty to our hallways—it also presents us with yet another opportunity to support the people and causes closest to us.

About the Art Showcase

Each quarter, we’ll host an exhibition by a local artist. This artist—chosen by a committee of proud community-minded Advanced AV team members—will be given the opportunity to display pieces in a variety of mediums within our office outside of Philadelphia. Featured artists will offer artwork for sale to our employees, interested community members, and business partners. And a portion of the proceeds from any artwork sales will go to charity.

At its outset, the Art Showcase will be held quarterly. To expand the project in the future, new artists may be featured monthly or multiple artists may be featured simultaneously. Looking ahead, we plan to not only increase the number of artists we feature but also the space within our office allotted for displaying their work. In addition, we’re planning a future reception for all our showcased artists—including one of the forthcoming showcases that will feature the photography work of our talented Advanced AV team members.

As this project matures, it will not only bring about more featured art, but also more potential for charitable giving as a result. Something that we really believe in here at Advanced AV, […]

Leadership and Teamwork: Lessons Learned from Healthy Competition

We’re taught from a fairly young age that regular exercise can have a substantial benefit to your overall physical and mental health. And while this is not breaking news, what is pretty impressive is how many people today devote hours of time and energy toward getting healthy. And two of our Advanced AV team members have embarked on health and fitness journeys we feel are newsworthy, as we’re feeling the benefits extending beyond the weight room and into our communities and our boardrooms.

Bryan Pass, Senior Sales Engineer and GoRuck Challenge Finisher

Some of you might have heard of “rucking,” which gets its name from the term “ruck sack,” military speak for “backpack.” “Rucking” is walking (or marching) while wearing your ruck sack, and when training or in the field, soldiers can ruck 25 plus miles a day, carrying a pack that weighs upwards of 200 pounds. I know. I’m tired just reading that.

This brings us to The GoRuck Challenge, a physical and mental team obstacle event. The event is tied to military training methods, as each team is lead by a US Special Forces soldier. Lasting anywhere from 12-13 hours and ranging 15 to 20 miles long, all participants carry a rucksack with a weight equivalency of six bricks, and each team must share the job of carrying one 20-pound weight and one American flag.

Who would be crazy enough to sign up for this? Our very own senior sales engineer Bryan Pass, who agreed to participate in the chilly February event at the insistence of his friend. Soon, several other friends had joined his “team within a team.” And this, Bryan said, was part of the reason he didn’t give up.

“The philosophy is that people are […]

Advanced AV, LLC Announces New Engineering Procedures
West Chester, PA – June 29, 2015 – Advanced AV, LLC announces the implementation of the TEAM approach in their engineering procedures. In an effort to streamline their process, an engineer and a drafter work continuously together to move from one project to another. This provides better time management and fluid movement between projects.

“The TEAM concept has proven to be a real success in engineering,” said Susan Lucci, engineer manager for Advanced AV, LLC. “The procedure establishes a better understanding of our clients likes and preferences, creates a stronger relationship between the client and engineering team and has allowed us to execute more efficiently.”

Engineering works together as teams for ninety percent of current Advanced AV, LLC’s projects. If a project is delayed, rather than abruptly shifting an engineer or drafter to other projects, the TEAM concept allows for a more organic shift to and from projects. This enables the teams to have the flexibility to manage difficult timelines. This small efficiency of time is beneficial when scheduling projects.

“We currently have three established teams using the TEAM concept and will continue to implement this approach with additional teams. The collaboration and mix of knowledge has brought strength and confidence to our engineering team,” said Lucci.
